I have a new hobby. Here’s what I like about it: It requires absolutely none of my time and even less of my thinking.
My brother introduced me to it when we were on our way to Pittsburgh one weekend this past May. Somewhere along I-70 E, he said this:
“Have you ever noticed how many shoes are on the highway?”
No, I never had. I’d seen shoes on the road, but I’d never given that fact much thought.
Until I started to see them everywhere.
Now, when I spy a roadside shoe, I call SC and say, “I’ve seen a shoe!” Then I wait for his congratulations and promptly hang up. I wish he’d return the favor, because honestly, if there’s a roadside shoe out there, I want to know about it.
I thought maybe SC and I were alone in this game, but we’re not. Here’s how I know:

It’s a whole site exclusively committed to the global spotting of roadside shoes! There’s even a section devoted to the mythology behind the single shoe phenomenon. New favorite thing!
So consider this a heads up: You may see photos of roadside shoes on this blog from time to time. Also, if you spot a roadside shoe, I hope you’ll take a picture and send it to me. I may even feature it here—so that you and the shoe can be famous. Like this:
Today’s Roadside Shoes: Courtesy of my friend Megan and her fabulous blog, http://elvisonvelvet.posterous.com/. Megan started her blog after some friends encouraged her to take and upload one photo a day. She’s talented, her sense of humor is simply quite great, and she’s a Pittsburgh gal, after all. And you know how I love me some Pittsburgh.
Megan even blogged about her roadside shoes here.
See? That was easy. Got a roadside shoe? Send a .jpg, just like Megan did in the comments below.

Addendum:
Today, I’m wearing one of my favorite pairs of shoes. I haven’t worn them all summer, and couldn’t remember why, until my heels hit the marble floors of my corporate offices. The problem: One heel is missing its tiny rubber sole, and when I walk, it sounds like I’m wearing a single tap shoe. You wouldn’t think people would notice, but they do. And when they do, they shoot me bewildered, incredulous looks. So, here’s a photo of my soon-to-be-roadside shoe. You might find it on 315-S later today.

I have a feeling from now on I will be noticing a lot more shoes on the side of the road. Isn’t that how it works? Kind of funny! I think I’ll get my kids on board with this…it will certainly entertain them on car rides!
What a funny coincidence. I always wonder about the cinderella’s of the world and wonder just how they manage to lose their shoes. Well tonight, I saw it happen with my own eyes. I was downtown when I saw a very liquored young lady run by and run right out of her shoe. “You lost your shoe!” my husband called and then he answered himself, “and you clearly don’t care.”
Living in India…I see a lot of abandoned shoes! Interestingly, temples (where we leave our shoes outside before entering) are fast becoming the den of shoe thieves, who run off with random pairs! I’ve always thought India must have a huge underground secon-hand shoe bazaar somewhere! Love the quirky post
One of my very first posts when I started my blog was about a pair of abandoned shoes I found near my office. Not just one. A whole pair!

My kids and I play this game all of the time! We spot the roadside shoes, and then make up stories about who they belonged to, and why they left them. A lot of the stories end with alien abduction, for some reason. I think I have a picture…I’ll have to hunt for it. Fun post!
…or, you could go get the rubber sole repaired for $5 at a shoe repair shop.
How does one lonely shoe get by the side of the road? Is someone walking around with one shoe? Odd.
Yeah, I never see 2 shoes beside the road. It’s always 1 shoe, which is weird. How do you lose 1 shoe?
I often wonder how so many shoes get lost on the road. Do people ride around with feet hanging out the car windows? Does one brother/sister tease the other by hanging a shoe out the window, and oh whoops! Is it a ploy to get a new pair of shoes? I mean, how much good is half a pair of shoes? Hmmm. Maybe I should try that one.

What a cute shoe! I’d totally put that on and limp around with it!
